Naming Ceremonies
Welcoming a baby or child into a family, community or society has been a part of human culture for millennia. Today we can make that welcome as personal and individual as we choose, with naming ceremonies being the perfect welcome for a baby or child, whether by birth, adoption, or the blending of families.
Naming ceremonies are an opportunity for parents, families, and friends to publicly declare their love and commitment to a baby or child, with the ceremony marking the start of a new journey for the parents and the chance to celebrate the wealth of potential in their new family member.
As your celebrant, I will work with you to create a celebration that is bespoke and reflects the uniqueness of your family. Naming ceremonies are as diverse as the families that are celebrating, there is no right or wrong, just what works for you. Typically, a ceremony will include readings from loved ones, promises/vows from parents and godparents or guideparents (a non-religious alternative), and symbolic ceremonies, similar to those found at a wedding, such as a sand ceremony or a unity candle.
